Pangolin

The Ruwenzori Sculpture Foundation aims to create models of artistic experiment that stimulate and expose contemporary talent within a broader cultural landscape. The 'Rock Music - Rock Art' project found inspiration in the ancient rock gongs found in Africa as the starting point to create a contemporary music performance and exhibition.

In February 2007 the Foundation took composer Nigel Osborne, members of the London Sinfonietta and sculptor Peter Randall-Page on a field trip to Uganda to work with Ugandan musicians and sculptors. The aim was to create sculpture and a collaborative music performance to bring a mutuality of advantage and experience to Uganda and UK. Supported by the British Council, a first performance of the musical work in progress was given at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Uganda in November 2007.

A major UK exhibition of new work by Peter Randall-Page and the premiere of Nigel Osborne’s commissioned work ‘Rock Music’ were an outstanding feature of the opening programme at 'Kings Place', the new Arts Centre at Kings Cross, London, home to the Guardian Newspaper, the London Sinfonietta and Pangolin London. An ideal environment for a cross-disciplinary project such as 'Rock Music - Rock Art', Kings Place also hosted performances and workshops by the Ugandan Dance Academy.
