Hamish Black was born in 1948 and lives and works in East Sussex. He studied at Eastbourne School of Art, North East London Polytechnic and the Slade School of Art. Throughout his career Black has continued to teach part time and he is currently an academic tutor on the Sculpture MA/BA degree course at Wimbledon School of Art.
Initially trained as a blacksmith in the family business, Black’s chosen medium is often metal although he has also worked in wood, paper and ceramic. He is now largely involved with large-scale public commissions in bronze, steel, aluminium or cast iron, requiring precise working drawings.
In contrast, his brush and ink drawings record moments of observation and have a freshness and immediacy: ‘The brush acts like a gravity switch between my body and the paper. Liquid ink arcs across space towards the absorbent surface. I start with an intake of breath, and this is held and then allowed out as the flow of ink and the exhaled air scripts a score…Until it dries, the ink is suspended between past, present and future.’
Black exhibits regularly and is represented in public and private collections in Britain and Europe.
